Prince Edward's slightly lapse comments that the chance of death is one of the attractions of the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme prompted some lively radio debate on Friday 30th October. Outlook's Technical Director, Will Manners was involved in radio interviews on Radio 2 and Radio 5 live responding to the debate topic "Are young people too cosseted?" joining the likes of Ben Fogle in an interesting, thought provoking discussion.
The spirit of Will's message is that activities such as overseas expeditions have an inherent perceived risk that is naturally exciting to young, adventurous people. But in fact, the actual risks involved in such activities are minimal due to the stringent risk management procedures that are put in place. To quote Will directly:
"Our streets are filled with young people on skate boards and bikes doing tricks or running roofs! I would suggest that the activities organised by Outlook Expeditions, the Scouting Association, Duke of Edinburgh's Award and thousands of schools and organisations throughout the UK are significantly safer than the pursuits undertaken by many young people in their own time...On an optimistic note, there is limited evidence of litigation in organised outdoor activities (and rightly so). There are lots of schools and groups engaging with the outdoors and as a result plenty of mature, confident and positive young people out there."
Have a listen to a podcast of the debate show with Nicky Campbell on Radio 5 Live entitled Youth Safety 30 Oct 09 - http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/5lnpi. (For those who are interested in hearing Will's voice he joins the debate at about minute 33!)
