Benefits of going on expedition
Education outside the classroom
Expeditions offer the chance for lessons in text books to jump off the page. Participants can experience new environments ranging from jungle to desert and understand different cultures by proactively taking part in them. Pupils develop greater awareness of risk and learn how to manage it as well as developing an appreciation for their environment. There are no exams, there is no failure, just taking part and giving it a go equals success.
It’s their expedition
Each team member will be given the chance to take on key leadership roles on their expedition and will be accountable for important decisions. They will be given the responsibility for their expedition budget and how it is spent, booking the necessary transport and arranging accommodation for the group.
Streetwise travellers
Students will experience the freedom of decision making whilst having the backup of the Expedition Leader and Link Teacher being there to guide and support them. Taking part in an expedition is the perfect introduction to gap year travel or future work overseas.
Managing risk
Managing risks and decision making are skills which are often under developed in young people growing up in modern society. Risk management and safe travel is a crucial element of Outlook’s programmes.
Participants are taught that their actions have an effect on themselves and on their entire team. They are encouraged to become risk aware and to develop a better understanding of the ways in which things can be approached and solved. Participants are taught how to assess risks dynamically and on a continued basis, whether they are out trekking or selecting which hostel to stay in.
Stand out from the crowd
Participating in an expedition will make a participant’s CV and UCAS application stand out from the crowd and improve their chances of securing a place at university and getting the job they want.
Fundraising
One of the key benefits of participating in an expedition programme is for the participants to develop and use their entrepreneurial skills to raise the money to fund their expedition. Outlook has worked with young people from different backgrounds who attend both independent and state schools as well as youth organisations from across the UK. In our experience – any young person can raise the money to go on an expedition if they set their mind to it. The Link Teacher and Outlook’s Expedition Programme Co-ordinators will encourage the participants with their fundraising. Participants can download Outlook’s Money Management Pack which offers advice and fundraising tips from the Members' Area of the website.

“Harriet had an amazing time; stretching her abilities to the limits, meeting such interesting people, learning about life – what an adventure. The group spirit was clearly evident at the final meeting!”
