What is a Link Teacher?

The Link Teacher is usually the adult responsible for launching the expedition within the school or organisation. They act as the main point of contact between Outlook and the school/organisation during the build-up period and help to keep the group motivated; they then accompany the team on expedition.

The role of the Link Teacher is:

  • To act as a point of contact between Outlook and the school/organisation
  • To encourage and motivate the team through the fundraising and build-up programme
  • To be an active member of the leadership team and take on pastoral care responsibilities.

The number of Link Teachers who accompany the group will vary depending on the size of the team and the requirements of the Local Authority. There will be at least one Link Teacher in each expedition team.

Being a Link Teacher does require dedication as well as the willingness to experience new cultures, unfamiliar surroundings and new situations. In return for their hard work and organisation Link Teachers receive a free place on the expedition.

Who can become a Link Teacher?

Link Teachers come from a whole range of subject backgrounds. Our current Link Teachers include geography, physics, mathematics, PE, biology and art teachers among many others! Some are experienced travellers while others have only limited experience. There are no pre-requisites other than the desire to travel and to encourage their students' development beyond the classroom. Any teacher who is looking to change their own outlook as well as inspire their students is welcome to apply.

Why become a Link Teacher?

We asked many of our current Link Teachers what inspired them to become one. Their answers included reasons such as:

  • To support their students' development outside the classroom
  • To offer their students the opportunity of overseas travel
  • To enable them to combine an interest in travel with their passion for teaching
  • They were attracted by the prospect of a community project as well as the notion of completing a tough physical challenge
  • The inclusive nature of our expedition programmes is appealing. The opportunity is open to everyone, not just the pupils who are musically, athletically or academically talented. Expeditions offer all students the chance to develop skills and talents they didn't know they possessed and to discover new things about themselves.
