Lucy began leading for Outlook after a friend recommended us to her. Then her local school were running an expedition and asked her to be their leader! She has worked with us for four years now and can't wait for this summer's Peru Expedition.
What led you to
Outlook and how long have you worked with us?
Outlook were recommended to me by a number of my friends that had led for them, and simultaneously, my local high school were planning an expedition with Outlook and asked me to lead for them. It seemed like a sign so I went along for a leader selection weekend to find out more.
How long have you worked with Outlook?
I’m now in my third year of leading for Outlook and am looking forward to heading to Peru this summer.
Why do you enjoy leading for us?
The expeditions are obviously very exciting and special experiences, and I love the work, but I also value the way that Outlook Expeditions take care of their leaders. I feel looked after!
What personal expedition experience do you have (away from Outlook)?
I’ve had a few personal climbing trips in the Alpine areas of France, Switzerland and Slovenia, plus the Anti Atlas of Morocco. I fell in love with Africa many years ago on a big gap year adventure.
How many expeditions have you led?
So far I’ve led three expeditions in Africa, two of which were for Outlook.
What is your top Outlook experience?
I completely fell in love with Mount Mulanje in Malawi whilst assessing a Gold Duke of Edinburgh expedition for Outlook. It’s one of the most magical and unique places I’ve ever been.
What benefits of expeditions have you seen first-hand?
I’ve seen young people discover hidden talents and develop new interests that they were not expecting. It’s definitely changed lives!
What’s your funniest experience on an Outlook Expedition?
Elephants walking through camp at night in Liwonde National Park was quite exciting – and the funny bit was that one did a pee like a river right next to a teacher’s tent – a few more centimetres and it could have been quite a damp experience for him!
What’s been the biggest challenge that you/your team have faced on an Outlook Expedition and how was it overcome?
Budgeting can be tricky when there are unexpected price rises. We’ve found the Ops Room support invaluable in that situation, but it’s also really important to keep good records and work through the finances. This is hard but budgeting is an important part of any adventurous expedition.
Sum up what expeditions are about in three words?
Teamwork, challenges and discovery!
